When we think of luxury in Campania, we don't just think of five-star hotels. We think of a terrace hanging over the sea in Positano at sunset, a boat waiting for us in the harbour of Capri to take us where the crowds never go, a dinner where every ingredient comes from just a few kilometres away. Here, true luxury is time, space and privacy. In this guide we list the places and experiences that, in our view, make Campania one of the most exclusive destinations in the Mediterranean.
The Amalfi Coast: villas between sky and sea
The Amalfi Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the first name that comes to mind. Between Positano, Praiano, Amalfi and Ravello you will find historic residences turned into boutique hotels, private villas with infinity pools and suites carved into the rock. Our advice: choose by view and quiet, not just by the number of stars. Ravello, higher up, offers gardens and peace; Positano and Praiano put the sea within reach.
Capri and Anacapri, the island that never goes out of style
Capri has a long tradition of luxury, from Roman villas to the salons of the twentieth century. To enjoy it at its best, sleep on the island for at least one night, so you can experience it in the evening, once the day-trip ferries have left. Anacapri is quieter and greener; the Piazzetta and Via Camerelle are the social heart. A private boat tour around the island, stopping at the Faraglioni and in the less crowded coves, is an experience you won't forget.
Ischia, Sorrento and the Gulf
Ischia combines luxury and wellbeing: resorts with private thermal parks, treatments and seaside gardens (see our wellness and spas guide). Sorrento and Massa Lubrense have grand historic hotels overlooking the Gulf of Naples, with Vesuvius opposite: perfect for exploring Capri, Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast without changing base.
Tailor-made experiences
- Private boat with skipper along the Amalfi Coast, around Capri or between Procida and Ischia.
- Fine dining: Campania is one of the Italian regions with the most restaurants recognised by the guides. Ask locally, including for terrace tables.
- Private visits to archaeological sites such as Pompeii and Herculaneum, with licensed guides and quieter time slots.
- Private tastings in the wineries of Irpinia and Sannio, among Taurasi, Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo.
- Dedicated transfers from Naples airport or railway station, by land or by sea.
Beyond the coast: the discreet luxury of the inland areas
Not all luxury looks at the sea. In Cilento, Irpinia and Sannio there are restored farmhouses and estates with just a few rooms, kitchen-garden cooking and vineyards all around. It is a luxury made of space and nature, ideal for those seeking total privacy.
When to go and how to plan
The best months are May, June and September: perfect weather and fewer crowds than in August. For the most sought-after properties, book many months ahead, especially for summer weekends. Remember that on the Amalfi Coast the roads are narrow and summer traffic heavy: travelling by sea is often the most convenient and the most beautiful option.
