Treglia is a small stone village, part of Pontelatone, on the slopes of Monte Maggiore in inland Caserta province. This is where the ufarella, a local chestnut variety, is harvested, and where Casavecchia, the native red grape of these hills, comes from. The festival, kept alive for decades by the village families and the Pro Loco, holds its final weekend on 17 and 18 October.

Stalls open in the evening around 7 pm, and on Sunday at lunchtime too. On the menu: chestnuts roasted on the spot, boiled chestnuts, castagnaccio and chestnut-flour sweets, plus savoury dishes from the Caserta tradition, with Casavecchia and local wines, live music and stalls of local produce. Entry is free.

We prefer Sunday lunch, to enjoy the view over the Volturno valley in daylight.
