For generations of Neapolitans, the days before Epiphany meant one thing: the Piazza Mercato fair, where toys and stockings for the Befana were bought. After a break of several decades, the tradition was revived by the City of Naples with the Musicant association: the fourth edition took place in January 2026.
Dozens of wooden stalls line Piazza Mercato and Piazza del Carmine, selling toys, colourful stockings, sweets, decorations and Neapolitan street food, from roast chestnuts to fried pizza. There are bands, majorettes and entertainment for children, and a late-night party in the square on the evening of 5 January.
The 2027 dates have not been announced yet: the fair is usually held in the days before Epiphany. We suggest combining it with a visit to the Carmine basilica and Sant'Eligio.
