Over Christmas the Teatro San Ferdinando, once the theatre of Eduardo De Filippo, stages one of his masterpieces: Il sindaco del Rione Sanità (The Mayor of Rione Sanità), directed by and starring Geppy Gleijeses, with Pino Micol in a special appearance and music by Teho Teardo.

At its heart is Antonio Barracano, a «man of honour» who dispenses a parallel justice in his neighbourhood, protecting the weak from an often absent state. Gleijeses stresses that this is not a play about the Camorra but a symbolic, political comedy that looks suffering and violence in the face. The production is by the Teatro di Napoli – Teatro Nazionale; performed in Italian and Neapolitan.

Our tip: an evening of Eduardo in his natural home, the San Ferdinando, in the working-class heart of the city.
