On the Sorrento peninsula, the Santa Lucia quarter of Meta honours the saint of light with rites of ancient origin. On the evening of 12 December the ceppone, a great log, is lit according to a centuries-old tradition, with tastings of local produce, music and an all-night vigil.
13 December is the most heartfelt moment: bonfires are lit in the quarter to the sound of zampogna bagpipes and the rhythms of the terrazzieri, the work songs of the men who once beat lime-and-stone floors by hand. In recent years the feast has also become a small cultural festival, with exhibitions, concerts and school activities, promoted by the town council and the Santa Lucia Cultural Centre.
The 2026 programme has not been published yet. We suggest the evening of the 13th to see the bonfires.
