After opening the San Carlo season, Davide Livermore returns to Naples with his staging of Ludovico Ariosto's Orlando Furioso, playing at the Teatro Mercadante for five performances. Margherita Rubino's adaptation keeps much of the poem's famous ottava rima verse.

The production focuses on the female figures who drive the action, from Angelica to Alcina, Bradamante to Clorinda, in an ever-shifting world of knights, magic and passion. The cast includes Laura Marinoni and Anna Della Rosa, with Renaissance music played live by the Ensemble La Chimera and costumes by Gianluca Falaschi. It is a production of the Teatro Nazionale di Genova with the Croatian National Theatre in Rijeka; performed in Italian.

Our tip: worth seeing even if you rarely go to spoken theatre, thanks to the visual power typical of Livermore's stagings.
