Montefusco is a small village perched on the hills between the Sabato and Calore valleys, in the heart of Greco di Tufo wine country. For centuries it was the capital of the Principato Ultra province and still shows it, starting with its famous Bourbon-era prison. At the end of October the Chestnut Festival returns, this year for its 36th edition.
It takes place in the town gardens on 30 and 31 October and 1 November, and the stalls also open in the morning and at lunchtime, which is not a given for a village festival. It is run by the Comitato Realtà Giovani together with Montefusco's youth forum, and you can feel the enthusiasm of the local young people behind it.
We like to pair it with a tour of the Greco wineries nearby, making the most of the All Saints' long weekend.
