This is the show that opens the 2026/27 season of the Teatro di Napoli – Teatro Nazionale: at the Teatro Mercadante on Piazza Municipio, Roberto Andò sets two twentieth-century one-act plays side by side, Samuel Beckett's Krapp's Last Tape and Harold Pinter's Press Conference.
The lead is Renato Carpentieri, who plays old Krapp listening to a recording of himself made thirty years earlier, in an impossible dialogue with his own past. In Pinter's piece, a spokesman for power answers journalists in smooth, menacing language. Two reflections on words, memory and power in about an hour, performed in Italian.
Our tip: it is a good reason to discover the Mercadante, a nineteenth-century theatre in the heart of the city, a short walk from the Maschio Angioino.
