In mid-January the old town of Campagna, a historic town at the foot of the Picentini mountains, lights up with the Fucanoli, great bonfires in honour of St Anthony the Abbot. It is one of the most heartfelt fire festivals in the province of Salerno, blending devotion, farming tradition and the pleasure of gathering together in the depths of winter.

Around the fires in the streets, meat is grilled over the embers and there are pulse and grain soups, home-made pasta such as cavatelli, sweets and local wine, while folk groups, street artists and traditional music fill the evenings. There is also a religious moment for the patron saint of animals. The feast is run by the community with the town council and the Pro Loco.

Our tip: head up at sunset and join one of the guided tours of the old town, rich in churches and palazzi.
