Campania is a region to enjoy on the move. In just a few kilometres you go from deep sea to mountains over 2,000 metres, and every area has its sport. In this guide we tell you where to go for the most popular outdoor activities, with a few tips to get organised.
Sea sports
- Diving: the Marine Protected Areas of Punta Campanella, Santa Maria di Castellabate and Costa degli Infreschi, and the Underwater Park of Baia in the Phlegraean Fields, where you swim among the remains of Roman villas.
- Sailing: the Gulf of Naples and the islands are a classic, with long-standing regattas.
- Kayak and SUP: along the Cilento coast, between Camerota and Palinuro, and on the Amalfi Coast, paddling into sea caves.
- Snorkelling in the coves of Procida, Ischia and Cilento.
Mountains and trekking
The Lattari Mountains offer panoramic paths above the Amalfi Coast; Cilento and the Alburni have routes between sea and mountains; the Matese and the Picentini are the realm of forests and peaks. On Vesuvius you walk up to the crater. In winter there are also small ski areas in the Matese and Irpinia.
Cycling and mountain biking
Quiet roads among vineyards in Irpinia and Sannio, panoramic climbs on the Amalfi Coast and in Cilento, dirt tracks in the parks: Campania is increasingly loved by cyclists. E-bikes make even the steepest climbs manageable.
Climbing
Limestone walls in Cilento, the Lattari Mountains and other parts of the Campanian Apennines attract climbers. Always rely on local guides and clubs for routes and conditions.
Tips
- Seasons: spring and autumn for trekking and cycling; June to September for water sports.
- Safety: for diving and technical activities, use qualified centres and instructors.
