Guided tour of the Paestum excavations

In the first part of Cilento not far from the river Sele, there is Paestum, one of the main centres of Magna Grecia and one of the precious archaeological gems of Italy.

The legend attributes its foundation to the Argonauts, but the story says that in 600 B.C. The Greeks from Sybaris settled in this area and founded a town called Poseidon, which soon became one of the most active centres in Campania.

In 273 BC The Romans established a colony, changing the name of the city to the present one. During the Empire, Paestum had a long and progressive decay, until a total abandonment in the 8th century due to floods that with their sediments have altered the area.

The city was only partially brought to light, the imposing walls and main buildings are located along the Roman Thistle. The three Doric temples of the 5th century BC are the temple of Neptune, the Basilica and the temple of Ceres. The excellent state of preservation of the buildings makes them among the best examples of Doric order in the West. In the center is the square called Agora by the Greeks on which overlook the Ecclesiasterion (building for the public assembly) of the 5th century B.C. It is an important building perhaps a place of worship or the tomb of the founder of the city. The Roman square was called the Forum, with the comitisum (for the public assembly) and the Temple of the Capitoline Triad (Capitolium), there are also the amphitheatre (1st century B.C.) and a large Hellenistic pool. To the West have been dug several blocks with houses in Hellenistic-Roman style. The entire archaeological area of the city has been included in the UNESCO list.

A short distance from the archaeological park is the National Archaeological Museum of Paestum, founded in 1952, where there are preserved artifacts dating back to the 7th century B.C. Until the 7th century A.D. There are precious testimonies of everyday life, artistic and artisanal objects.

Among the important sculptures are the treasures of the sanctuary of Hera, the painted slabs of the so-called Plunger's tomb, and several fragments of funerary paintings from the 4th century B.C.
