Oasis WWF Caves of Morigerati

oasi wwf grotte di morigerati

The Oasis is the most important conservation project of WWF Italy and represents the concrete intervention in defense of the natural territory and biodiversity. Created in 1985, it has an extension of 607 hectares. It is an oasis of protection of the fauna, subject to landscape and hydrogeological constraint. The management is direct, in agreement with the municipality of Morigerati.

The village lies on the top of a cliff overlooking the WWF oasis of the Cave of Morigerati, where you can admire the wonderful resurgences of Bussento.

It is equipped with nature trail and equipped area for visiting the caves. We make: Guided tours, work camps, green weeks, fields of study and research.

The Oasis is first of all safeguarding a territory, protecting biodiversity, maintaining landscapes and natural values, but not only. The existence of an oasis has allowed and allows the protection of a piece of territory that would have been lost or would have suffered actions of degradation even irreversible.

The WWF has decided to set up the nature pathways so that everyone can appreciate and fully enjoy the natural environment in which they move, offering the stimuli valid for all the senses: for the view, with particular glimpses through the realization of small Parking areas and with the possibility of observing the animals in quiet conditions for the visitor and for the animals themselves. A path that facilitates contact with nature, without any disturbance.

The valorisation of natural and cultural resources passes through the protection of an area of naturalistic value, characterized by the presence of the biological reserve of the caves of Morigerati.

The bottom of the gorge of the River Bussento offers a suggestive habitat in which the vegetation of Ripa is characterized by the development of mosses and ferns, and among the trees, of willows and alders. To the northwest, in a dominant position on the valley, extends a well-preserved Holm oak. On the other slopes exposed to the north, the Holm oak is accompanied by oak, ash and hornbeam, while on the slope towards the village of Sicilì, the Mediterranean scrub is mainly extended. The southeast side favours plants that are hot-arid in climates such as the arboreal Euphorbia, the Ampelodesma and the mastic. The presence of many animal species, some of which are endangered, confirms the importance of conserving the ecosystem of the Bussento River.

Very rich is also the fauna of the waterways where no doubt dominates the population of otters (Lutra Lutra), perhaps the richest in Italy.
In the areas closest to the springs, where the water is colder, more constant and the dense sheltered woods provide abundant shade, live the rare spectacled Salamander (Salamandra terdigitata), Italian endemism of great naturalistic interest, and the most Common Salamander (Salamandra salamandra).
The aquatic fauna is also characterized by the presence of trout, shrimp and crabs. In the sites with clearer waters and rich in oxygen abound the trout (Salmo macrostigma) and the Blackbird Dipper (Cinclus Cinclus), along the banks are frequent small waders waders as the small courier (Charadrius dubious) while in the small puddles the Italian frog, the Dalmatina frog, the bellied from the Yellow belly (pachypu bomb) and the Toad (Bufo bufo); Among the Rocky gorges is the rare white (Circaetus gallicus), a large raptor that feeds mainly on the reptiles that frequent the oasis.
In the Holm oak there are the wild cat and the wolf. Some of the most significant birds include raptors, such as the rare Goshawk, Kestrel and kites. The Imperial Raven is also present.

A fundamental element of the rural landscape that characterizes the territory of the municipality of Morigerati is the presence of the river Bussento and its watershed of reference. This watercourse crosses the municipal territory, for about 7 Km, starting from the area of the resurgence (Grotte del Bussento); This watercourse marks the territory in a profound way and constitutes one of the most relevant phenomena from a landscape-environmental point of view; Moreover, the underground section of the Bussento gives life to one of the most important karst phenomena present in Italy.
The municipality of Morigerati is located in the National Park of Cilento and Vallo di Diano and is valued within the same area with the itinerary N ° 15 of the park.

The Bussento River, which rises from the southern slope of Mount Cervo, in the vicinity of squares in Pictish sinks into a colossal sinkhole to reappear, after having traveled its mysterious journey into the bowels of the Earth, a few kilometers further south, Under the village of Morigerati. The whole area offers one of the most beautiful and most naturalistic attraction of the park. The walk starts from Morigerati with a beautiful mule track paved with stone and partly dug in the rock that, after a series of hairpin bends, leads to the entrance of the cave. From here you enter with a narrow stone staircase and you pass the deep and spectacular canyon, dug by the river, with two wooden bridges. Outside, then, the river offers suggestive views along the gorge, where clear and fresh waters form flowing through deep and suggestive pools, rapids and waterfalls. The whole area for its extraordinary scenic and naturalistic beauty deserves a prolonged stop.
